Combination Product

A novel medical product that involves both a drug and a dedicated medical device. Sensor-enabled pills and the current generation of feedback-controlled insulin pumps are examples. The approval process for combination products is complex because, by definition, the intent is to control bioavailability of the drug – an objective requiring rigorous clinical evaluation with many variables.
